Name: Attic Black Figure Band Cup

Description: H. 4.7cm, diam. 8.5cm, diam. (including handle) 10.6cm. One handle missing, the other broken and mended. Area of upper body to side of handle broken and mended. Small cup with vertical curved lip, horizontal, upturned handles, short stem and slightly conical base. Fine reddish clay. Lustrous black glaze with details added in reddish brown paint. Interior painted black, reserved band at lip. Toe and inside of handles reserved. Broad black bands above and below handles. Lower band separated from the black painted lower body, stem and upper base by a narrow reserved line. At the level of the handles, there is a row of blotchy palmettes with details picked out in brownish-red. They are separated by tendrils and set on a chain of roughly drawn dot circles.
Date: c. 575-560 B.C.
Discussion: Similar in shape to British Museum Old Catalogue of Vases (1851), 715, CVA 2, pl. 15.6.
