Name: Attic Miniature Skyphos or Kotyle
Picture:
Description: H. 4.3cm, max. diam. (excluding handles) 5.5cm, max. diam. (including handles) 8.6cm. A few very minor chips on the rim but otherwise the piece is intact. It looks somewhat worn in places, probably from use. Fine buff clay. Interior black. Handles, one of which is quite worn, are black except for part of inner surface. Slight ring base, underside of ring black. On the body there are two horizontal black lines, one about 0.6cm, the other about 1.1cm, above the base. Above these the whole body, except for the small area within the handles, is decorated with wide wavy black lines on a diagonal from upper left to lower right. The general effect is that of the stripes of a zebra. A few of the lines encroach on the upper horizontal band and there is one (perhaps a mistake) which extends through both bands to the base.
Date: Early 6th century B.C.
Discussion: In shape, this is typical of Corinthian skyphoi found in Athens. The reserved band low on the body and under the handles is also found in this shape, though more usually in black ware (see Sparkes and Talcott The Athenian Agora XII, pp. 81, 82, pl. 14).
