Name: Attic Black Figure Band Cup

Description: H. 6.3cm, diam. 12.4cm, diam. (including handles) 17.5cm. Base and rim chipped. Fine, reddish clay. Lustrous black paint with details added in brown and cream. Shallow cup with prominent vertical lip, horizontal, upturned handles and a short stem. Interior painted to reserved tondo with central small dotted circle. Toe and inside of handles reserved, broad black band above handles. At the level of the handles there is a row of rapidly drawn brown palmettes, each surmounted by a cream arched line and separated from its neighbours by cream and brown vertical lines. Below the palmettes there is an intermittent band of cream blobs, under which is a thin black line separated by a narrow reserved band from the black painted lower body, stem and the upper side of the base.
Date: c. 575-550 B.C.
Discussion: Similar in shape to British Museum Old Catalogue of Vases (1851), 715, CVA 2, pl. 15.6.
