H. 5.2cm, diam. 16.2cm, diam. (including handles) 22.4cm. Extensively worn, especially around the top of the handles and on one side of the interior. On the opposite outside there are horizontal scratch marks and the paint has been almost completely worn away. Fine orange clay, lustrous black paint. Stemless cup with horizontal up turned handles and a moulded foot-ring. Glazed black except the underside of the base which is reserved to a small central circle. |

For the shape see University of Reading 22.iii.7, CVA Great Britain 12, pl. 34.14. The thickness of the walls, the shape of the base and the overall chunky, squat character of the piece suggest an Italian origin. |
