Description: H. 2cm, diam. 13.7cm. Black glaze. Central design of four stamped palmettes set crosswise in an impressed frame.
Date: 5th century B.C.
Discussion: See Reading 87.35/29 (CVA Great Britain 12, pls. 34.13 and 35.8 for a description). The treatment of the decoration in the Reading piece -- palmettes in relief in an impressed frame rather than the Attic practice of concave palmettes with no frame -- lead to the conclusion that the piece in Reading is Italian (CVA Great Britain 12, p. 54). The same decoration on this pot would indicate an Italian origin as well.
