H. 8.5cm, diam. 9.3cm. Broken and mended. Pieces missing, notably in the area of the handle ring and the lower body. Worn and chipped, especially on the lower part of the body. White encrustation concentrated inside the spout. Fine pale brown clay. Globular body, small foot, spout and a false central neck. This is joined by vertical handles to the shoulder. The outside surfaces of the handles are painted dark brown up to the top of the false spout which is decorated with dark and light brown concentric circles. The bases of the false neck and the spout are circled with brown bands which overlap. The inside and outside of the rim of the spout are painted brown. Roughly painted radial lines and a small area of dots fill the area of the handle ring. Around the upper part of the body are two broad brown bands separated by three narrow pale brown-orange lines. Cf. for shape Edinburgh Museum 1921.362 and 1921.363, CVA Great Britain 16 pls. 1.1, 1.2. The high centre of gravity is typical of the 'perked up' type (see Furumark, MP, shapes 179-80). Both the shape and the non-figural, predominantly linear decoration (see Furumark, MP, p. 428) suggest a Late Helladic IIIB date. |
