Name: Cypriot Bowl with Vertical Handle
Picture:
Description: H. 5.2cm, diam. at body 8.5cm, diam. (including handle) 9.8cm. Cyprus, Politico region (Morris, 29 -- this particular decorative motif most common in that region). The lip is chipped and has a large piece missing; the paint along the upper part of the vessel, near the handle, is chipped, while the paint on the handle is so faded that it is almost invisible. Vertical-banded bowl with round base. Hand made, white painted ware with cream-coloured slip and brown paint. The slight lip has a zigzag band around the interior; the exterior of the body has a band at the rim and at the base. The upper half of the vessel is decorated with a row of latticed triangles -- two large at the front and two small near the handle. The base has a large 5-pointed star and a large central dot with surrounding circle. The vertical handle has a hook at the top and is outlined and decorated with groups of oblique lines.
Date: Middle Bronze Age, c. 1900-1650 B.C.
Discussion: Similar in shape to Morris, pl. 121b; Cf. Birmingham Museum 1388'85; CA # 326 (not illustrated) similar shape and decoration.
