Name: Reclining River God
Picture:
Description: Walbrook Mithraeum. London Museum. H. 0.23m. Head and shoulders of a bearded reclining river god, with curly hair and muscular torso. In his right hand he holds the stem of a bull-rush, its two leaves falling on his shoulder and chest. The fruit and flower of the reed rests against his head.
Date: Second century A.D.
Discussion: This was carved under Hadrian or Antoninus Pius. It probably represents the river Thames, close to the Walbrook Mithraeum, or else it represents the primeval stream that cleanses and purifies the initiate into the mysteries of Mithras.
