By Lysippos of Sikyon. Marble copy of a bronze original. Delphi Museum, Delphi. H. 1.97m. A standing naked youth, his body twisted and relaxed in the Lysippic 'S' shape. His weight rests on the right foot, through the right hip, and his left foot is turned outwards slightly so that the leg bends at the knee. The head is turned to the left. Originally, the right hand would have held a victor's wreath. |

This was originally the dedication of the Thessalian dynast Daochos of Pharsalos at Delphi. Agias was a boxer who won athletic victories in the late fifth century. A verse on the base beneath the figure repeats that of a base from Larisa, home to the same Daochos, and signed by Lysippos. We should imagine that the marble copy is a true copy of the original bronze, although Pollitt 1986: 306 n. 4 exercises caution on the attribution. See Robertson 1981: 168, fig. 228; Stewart 1990: 75-6, 188-90, 289-90; 552-3 (ills.). |
