Name: Bust of Hermes
Picture:
Description: From the group Hermes and the infant Dionysus, attributed to Praxiteles. Olympia Museum. H. 2.13m (whole statue). Bust of Hermes. His head turns to the right to gaze down at the baby Dionysus, whose hand can be seen on Hermes' right shoulder.
Date: c. 340 B.C.
Discussion: Pausanias attributes this group to the great Praxiteles, and on the face of it, it would appear to be a correct assumption as the style is very close. However, the cloak and strut are not typical of a fourth century original, and it is instead suggested that it may have been Praxiteles' son, Kephisodotos II, that worked on this piece.
