Name: Head of Eros
Picture:
Description: Roman copy of Hellenistic original. From Centocelle. Rome, Vatican. H. 0.4m. Bust of Eros as a beautiful, effeminate youth. His head turns to the left (it should be tilted downwards and to the right). His face is smooth and untroubled, with a long straight nose, sleepy eyes, slightly pouting lips. His hair is a mane of tumbling curls, small across his forehead then larger at the crown. Long tendrils fall onto his shoulders and neck.
Date: c. 350-330 B.C
Discussion: Eros underwent many changes in his sculptural appearance, beginning with (and returning to) the small child accompanying Aphrodite. The Hellenistic interest in beauty transformed this Eros of Centocelle at least into something more akin to the painted images of the God of Love on red-figure pottery, the long-haired beautiful boy.
