Name: Terracotta Group
Picture:
Description: H. 7.2cm, W. 5.8cm. Head of the seated figure and most of the reclining figure lost. Creamy-orange terracotta. Part of a hollow moulded group. Back unmoulded, underside left open. The group consists of two figures -- one (female) seated at the end of a couch, the other reclining. The seated figure wears a chiton and himation and plays a double flute. On her lap rests the right foot of the second figure of whom only the lower sections of the legs are preserved. These are uncovered and stocky, probably of a male.
Date: Mid to late 5th century.
Discussion: Genre scenes became popular from the late 6th century onwards. The subject matter and stylistic features of this piece suggest a mid-late 5th century date. The group may represent a flute girl and a diner, or possibly a maenad and Dionysus, but specific identification of the figures is precluded by the fragmentary condition of the piece. Cf.
