Genre scenes became popular from the late 6th century onwards. The subject matter and stylistic features of this piece suggest a mid-late 5th century date. The group may represent a flute girl and a diner, or possibly a maenad and Dionysus, but specific identification of the figures is precluded by the fragmentary condition of the piece. Cf. British Museum BM 1179 and BM 1494, R.A. Higgins Catalogue of the Terracottas in the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities British Museum (1954-59), women playing flutes. British Museum, BM 1264 (as above), a woman sitting at the feet of a reclining male figure. |
