Name: Attic Flat-Bottomed Alabastron

Description: H. 9.5cm, diam. at base 3.3cm, depth 9.2cm. Chipped at rim, base of neck and base. Fine orange clay, black lustrous paint. Broad flat base, bell-shaped body with a ridge at the juncture with the neck. The neck flares outwards to a broad flat rim. Black glazed, underside of base and upper side of rim reserved. Black band around the inside of the neck.
Date: c. 5th century B.C.
Discussion: The shape, adapted from alabastra prototypes, was adopted by potters from the 5th century onwards. Such pots would have been used for perfumes and oils. See B. Sparkes The Red and the Black: Studies in Greek Pottery (1996) 72-4, figs. III 5 and 6.
