Name: Head of Ariadne
Picture:
Description: From the south slope of the Akropolis, Athens. Athens, National Museum. H. 0.45m. Larger than life-size head of a woman, looking slightly upwards and to the left with an expression perhaps of sorrow. Her eyes are deep-set beneath arching brows, and her lips are pursed. She is a mature woman, and her curly hair is bound by a wide fillet and tied at the back into a bun.
Date: c. 300 B.C.
Discussion: From the expression on her face, one would certainly take this to be Ariadne, mourning her loss of Theseus on Naxos. However, this is a mature woman, not a young girl, so a secondary reading could be that of a Nike.
