Name: Funerary Stele
Picture:
Description: No provenance. Present location unknown. H. 0.56m. Small stele. A seated woman to the left, her veil over her head. She tugs at the veil with her left hand in the time-honoured gesture of aidos. In her right hand she clutches a small dove, given to her by a male child, probably her son, who stands to the right, looking up at her.
Date: 400-350 B.C.
Discussion: The sense of alienation is greater than that of previous examples of grave steles, this time with the mother unable to acknowledge her son, and only half aware of the gift of the dove. Her listless action of touching her veil is not only a symbol of aidos, signifying that she was a good wife whilst alive, it also represents death, the drawing of the veil across the face of a corpse.
