Parthenon frieze north, slabs XLI-XLII. London, British Museum. H. 1.06m. The north frieze shows the main body of the cavalry en route to the Akropolis. From the left: four riders in close formation move off to the left, the last figure in a short cloak and hat turning to urge on his comrades. A horse champs at the bit, stamping its forelegs as a naked ephebe with a cloak slung over his shoulders stands holding the animal, looking back for his rider. Behind him, a rider moves off. To the right, a cavalryman makes ready, a young boy helping him to tie the belt of his chiton. |
