Two goddesses fused into one fluid form; Aphrodite lies sprawled across the rock, resting her upper torso in the lap of her mother Dione. Neither goddess has her head preserved, so the identification is not certain; Dione is sometimes called Themis (Robertson 1981: 97). This piece is celebrated for its magnificent draperies, which cling to the bodies beneath, both revealing and concealing. |
