Description: H. 19.7cm, diam. at shoulder 6.7cm. The lip and a few spots on the body and foot have small chips. The neck, just above the handle join, has been broken and mended in modern times. Fine, pale orange buff clay. Lip painted in black glaze inside and out. Exterior handle also black. A row of narrow tongues approximately 1.5cm long around the shoulder with a second row (c. 0.5cm long) at base of neck except under handle. The main scene occupies the upper two-thirds of the body. In the centre, a male figure, possibly seated or reclining. To the left, a standing female holding a lyre. Flanking these, facing inward, are women on horses or mules. Above the two central figures are two wavy horizontal lines with rows of dots on either side (vines?). Above the whole scene are two horizontal lines and, above these, two rows of dots. Discussion: The slim tapering shape, flat shoulder with rays and careless drawing seem to show that this piece has an affinity with the Class of Athens 581, see J. Boardman Athenian Black Figure Vases (1974) p.148, pls. 258, 259.
