Name: Head of Kouros
Picture:
Description: From the Ptoan sanctuary, Boiotia. Athens National Museum. H. 0.33m. Archaic kouros head. Elongated face with high cheekbones, large almond-shaped eyes, high arched brows, triangular nose and thin compressed lips. A fillet in the hair. The fringe is indicated in low relief, then gathered at the back to fall over the shoulders in wavy braids. The ears are set very close to the skull.
Date: c. 590 B.C.
Discussion: Typical kouros of Naxian influence. The Ptoan sanctuary was controlled by the Naxians for a period, then Paros and Attika began to have more of an influence. The series of kouroi stopped around 500 due to the Theban annexation of the region, which was, in their view, getting too powerful. See Richter 1988: no. 10, p. 48, pl. 72-75; Stewart 1990: 126-7.
