Translation
This is an agreement made between the noble man, lord Hugh of Abernethy, on one side, and lady Ethona, spouse of the late lord Cristin son of ‘Banchcauer’ on the other, namely, that the said lady Ethona in free widowhood and [in] her power, granted to the said lord Hugh all those lands and possessions by right and assise of land composed by the reckoning of the said lord Cristin, her husband, in the name of her third part; namely, all those lands and possessions comprising her third part within Argyll, with lands belonging to her within Atholl: having and holding by the said lord Hugh and his heirs or his assignees for all the lifetime of the said lady Ethona, with all pertinents, rights, liberties, and easements belonging to the said lands, or which ought to belong to them by right: he and his heirs or his assignees rendering thence to the said lady or to her assignees forever, every year, the old rent which they had been accustomed to render for the said land in the last days of lord Cristin, the husband of the said lady, with all the services and secular demands pertaining to the said lands. And knowing that the said lord Hugh and his heirs or their assignees will perform for the lord king for as much time on those lands which they may hold at ferme the service to the lord king owed from the said lands, and they will satisfy the lord king of the annual rent owed, on the dates they are owed, for the lands of the said lady Ethona in Atholl. Moreover, the same lord Hugh and his heirs or their assignees will pay the rents on the aforesaid lands to the said lady and her assignees for the said lands on the two terminals of the year, namely, on Pentecost (or Whitsun) and on the Feast of St Martin in Winter (or Martinmas), the first due-date for payment beginning on Pentecost in the year of grace 1277. In testimony of these things in this writing, prepared in the form of a chirograph (or indenture), the seal of the said lord Hugh is appended to the part staying with the lady, and the seal of the said lady Ethona is appended to the part staying with the said lord Hugh.
