June 19th. Field of Battle near Water Lude
My dear dearest Katharine,
I have only just time to tell you that I have lived through two of the sharpest actions ever fought by men. We have defeated the French at all points & they are in full retreat. Our loss has been prodigious as the brunt of the business fell upon the guards & many of my best and dearest friends are gone but these things must be and my favourite little horse was shot under me & at present I have only one, but I must get another here. I have no time to write more at length as if I do I fear I shall be too late for the staff officer who is to take this. So God bless you my dear love & believe me for your
Affectionate Saltoun
