Translation

William, by the grace of God, king of Scots, to his bishops, abbots, earls, barons, justices, sheriffs, ministers and to all the responsible men of all his land, greetings. Those present and future should know that I have given and granted, and by this my charter have confirmed to Earl Gilbert of Strathearn, Kinveachy, by its right bounds, and with all its just belongings, for him and his heirs to hold from me and my heirs, as freely and quietly as he holds the earldom of Strathearn. Witnessed by Hugh, bishop of St Andrews, David my brother, Earl Duncan, Earl G. Of Angus, Walter of Berkeley, the chamberlain, John of London, Robert of Berkeley, Malcolm Mac Gillis, Gilchrist, son of the daughter of Samuel, Gillemichael Mac Duncan, Gillecolm the marshall.

Document Information

William I, king of Scots (d. 1214)

Manuscript references:

Duke of Atholl, Blair Castle, Athole Charters, vol. 1, no. 1.

‘Athole Charters’ refers to a notebook in the Blair Castle muniment room, which was the result of a process whereby Sir William Fraser took the earliest documents out of various files which had been arranged according to lands, and organised them chronologically instead. This work was done in preparation for a volume on the Dukes of Atholl, which was never completed. The duke apparently was not happy with Fraser’s proposed price for the work.
